There are number of purposes why museum
collects specimens, documentation purpose, building archives, studying natural
environment, relation to other species and change of the environment over long
time of period, etc.
However, when I saw this Cypraeidae collection
of Sir Joseph Bank during Captain James Cook’s HMS Endeavour voyage, I realized
pure interest and associated collecting habit were strongest motive of all.

博物館が資料収集を行う目的は、資料分類と保存のため、自然環境の研究、他の生物との関係の解明、時代による背全環境の変化など数多くあります。
しかし、このジェームス・クックのエデンバー号に乗船していたジョセフ・バンク卿のタカラ貝のコレクションを見ると、純粋な興味と収集癖が一番大きな原動力だと思いました。
