Historic Monument, Shinkan Sen’s starting point: Tokyo Station/歴史記念碑、新幹線の起点:東京駅



There is a sign inlayed on the platform floor at line 16/17 and 18/19 for the memory of Sinkan Sen (bullet train) that started operation since 1964.
The success of the Shinkan Sen was a big turning point for the train industry world wide since it had proved that there were still potential in the need of train as a transportation then declining against rapid growing automobile and airplane in that era.   
Sinkan Sen has since become the forerunner of the high-speed railway network which influence affected world wide to start developing high speed train in Europe and Asian countries.

東京駅の16/17 番線と18/19番線のプラットフォームの床面には、1964年に開業した新幹線を記念するサインが埋め込まれています。
新幹線の成功は、当時、世界中で自動車や航空機に押されていた鉄道輸送の可能性を証明し、ヨーロッパやアジアの国々でその後の高速鉄道開発が進められるきっかけとなったのです。

Monument : Noyamakita-Rokudouyama Park / モニュメント:野山北・六道山公園



This .granite sculpture was created by an influential contemporary artist, Nobuo Sekine (1942- current).

His public art work had been popular and could find various government places.

この花崗岩の彫刻は、数多くの作家に影響を与えた現代美術作家、関根伸夫(1942- 現在) の作品でした。

この作家のパブリックアート作品は人気があり、日本各地の行政関係の場所でよく見つけることができます。

Art in the public space: Ikabukuro West Gate Park / 公共の場のアート:池袋西口公園



The owl is a symbol bird for Ikebukuro area since the place name Ikebukuro is consisted with two kanji characters-, 池(ike) and 袋(fukuro or in certain cases pronounce as bukuro)and the Japanese name for an owl is fukuro.
Eventually, owl became the symbol for Ikebukuro for some time.

A monument with bunch of owls standing on a top of poles installed in a park build and operated by Toshima ward.

池袋の名前に「フクロウ」が入っているとして、しばらく前からフクロウは池袋の公式のシンボルされています。
池袋に公園西口には、ポールの上に立つフクロウの群れのシンボルが設置されています。

A Monument for a Historical Event : Tamachi / 歴史的な出来事の記念碑:田町







The Edo, Shogun’s government, ruled Japan over 260 years and had became deteriorate in the final decades because of the institutional fatigue under single central government too long, revels from rural clans overthrow the aged government at last.

Since Shogun government was organized by samurai worrier, many of them was willing to sacrifice themselves that might possibly burn down entire city of Edo that said to be a home for 1 million population.

To avoid the worst bloodshed, government representative Kaishu Katsu and revel leader Nanshu (a.k.a. Takamori) Saigo secretly met in a house in Tamachi.
Fortunately, Edo government agreed to surrender without any resistance.

There is a Monument build in front of the location where the meeting place was and even a street map shows the location and brief description on the meeting.

260年以上の長きにわたり専制君主制で統治していた江戸幕府も、末期には制度疲労を起こし最後には地方の雄藩によって倒幕されてしましました。

江戸幕府は武士の集まりでしたから自分を犠牲にしてでも徹底抗戦を唱える者も多く、最悪の場合は当時100万人の人口を誇っていたとも言わる江戸の町が、灰燼に期す恐れもありました。

最悪の流血事態を回避するため、幕府側の勝海舟と維新のリーダー西郷南洲(隆盛)が密かに薩摩藩江戸屋敷で会談を行いました。幸い、江戸幕府は無血開城に同意しました。

この会談が行われた場所には記念碑が建っていて、町の案内地図にも場所と会談についての解説が記されています。
