Battery pack  

I found a big bike maker Giant’s power assisted bike on the street in Shibuya.

The battery pack is installed cleverly on the rear carrier along with same shape pannier bag locked on the other side of the carrier which could fit a spare battery inside.

The design of the battery pack was so similar to the pannier bag, I didn’t recognize if that was a battery at all when I saw it first time.

A removable ride control panel is installed on the handle that indicates speed, riding mode (sports, normal and eco), remaining battery capacity and headlight on/off, etc.

渋谷の路上で大手自転車メーカーGIANTの電動アシスト自転車を見かけました。

バッテリーパックは後ろの荷台バックに似せて上手に取り付けられていています。バッテリーの反対側のバッグには、予備のバッテリーを入れることもできるそうです。

荷台のバックとデザインを合わせているので、最初見たときにはバッテリーパックだとは気が付きませんでした。

取り外しができるライドコントロールがハンドルに取り付けられていて、速度、モード（スポーツ、通常、エコ）、バッテリー残量、前照灯のオン/オフなどを表示しています。

Community bicycle in Kanazawa: Machi-Nori / 金沢のコミュニティー自転車：まちのり

City of Kanazawa’s community bicycle uses same operation as Kawagoe city in Saitama that allowed using same IC card and passing word if the user has been registered in either city.

Both city charge 200 yen for a day use, the catch is, you should bring back to the bike port within certain time, 30 min. in Kanazawa and 40 min. in Kawagoe.  If you return and lock your bike, you could pick up other bike from any bike port among the city all day long without paying extra, 19 ports in Kanazawa and 10 in Kawagoe.

If you failed to return those fixed length of time, 30 min. or 40 min., they will charge you 200 yen for every 30 min.

You can pay by your credit card on the vending machine or cash at their office.  Or you already have transit IC card like Suica or Pasmo, you can pay from them.  Also, you could apply Kanazawa’s Machi-Nori IC card, if you willing to pay 800 yen for deposit that may not be repaid unless you return the IC card.  So, if you want keep your Machi-Nori IC card as souvenir, you loose 800-yen deposit.

Same rental bike in Kawagoe, Saitama

金沢市のコミュニティー自転車は、埼玉県川越市の自転車システムと同じで、どちらかで登録していれば、お互いに同じICカードやパスワードを使うことができます。

両市とも1日の料金は200円ですが、金沢市は30分、川越市は40分以内に市内にある自転車ポートのいずれかに自転車を戻し、ロックしないといけません。直にないに返却すれば、一日中、市内のどこの自転車ポートからでもまた時間制限内での利用ですが、自転車を借りることができます。

もし時間内に自転車の返却ができないと、30分毎に200円づつ課金されます。

自販機でクレジットカードか、市内にある事務所での現金支払胃ができます。または、もしや交通系のICカード（スイカやパスモ）をすでに持っていれば使うこと可能です。金沢のまちのりICカードを作ることもできますが、800円のデポジットが必要です。デポジットの返金を希望するのでしたら、カードを返却しないとならないので、カードを記念に持って帰りたいのでしたら800円は諦めてください。

Community Cycle, Bicycle Sharing : Saitama City / さいたま市で運用されているレンタル自転車システム

The City of Saitama is trying to be a bike friendly city, thus organizes Tour of France exhibition race, Le Tour de France Saitama Criterium for last two years and this years Criterium was just held two weeks ago.

The city is also had been adapted the community rental cycle system that uses IC card system.

The user must apply and register as member in advance before using this service.  The regular membership would be monthly bases, however, one-day membership also could apply through their web site and the vending machine on site issues membership card, convenient for casual user or tourist.

さいたま市は自転車にやさしい街を目指しています。その為、過去２年にわたり、ツールド・フランス埼玉クリテリウムを主催していて、今年のクリテは２週間前に行われたばかりです。

また、ICカードを使ったコミュニティーレンタサイクルの仕組みを導入しています。

利用者はまず、申請をして会員荷なる必要があります。通常は月極めの定期会員ですが、たまに使う利用者や観光客に便利な、一日だけ有効の一時利用会員も用意されています。

支払いは現金、スイカ等のプリペイカード、クレジ ットカードです。

PET Bottle Air Suspension Bike: Maruishi Cycle / ペットボトルを使ったエアサス自転車：丸石サイクル

This unique suspension bike was manufactured by Maruishi Cycle in 2000, collaborated with Pepsi Corporation. As it shows in this picture, a Pepsi plastic bottle sandwiched between bike frame actually functions as an air dumper and absorbs the impact from the road. The pressure of the air in the bottle is controlled by pumping right amount of air via a valve on the bottle cap.
 Interesting idea, too bad we don’t see them these days.

この変わったサス付き自転車は、2000年に丸石サイクルがペプシと共同で販売しました。写真でご覧のように、フレームにサンドウィッチされているペプシの容器が、路面からの衝撃を吸収する空気ダンパーの役目を担っています。容器の空気圧の調整は、ボトルのキャップに付いたバルブを通して空気を入れて行います。

面白いアイデアですね。
最近あまり見かけないのが残念です。
