Virtual museum guide: Darwin Center, Natural History Museum / バーチャル ガイド：ダーウィンセンター、ロンドン自然史博物館

Natural History Museum has plants and insects collections that go back to 400 years.  At Darwin Center, the visitor could see not only those specimens but also the scientists working on their research, naming, analyzing and preserving specimens.

At the start of the exhibit, visitor will find four different tools like insect trap, specimen for instance, placed on the counter which represents particular specialists who guide the visitors in various locations through out the Centre. 

When the visitor touches one of the tools, a scientist who specialized in the related field appears on the screen and starts to greet and guide you to the tour.

ロンドン自然史博物館は400年前からの昆虫や植物のコレクションを保有しています。ダーウィンセンターでは、来館者はそれらの標本資料を見るだけではなく、名前を付けたり、標本を研究したり保存したりする科学者の研究活動を見る事が出来ます。

展示の始まりはで、展示を案内してくれる専門の研究者を象徴する捕虫器や標本等の道具が４種類カウンターに置かれています。

来館者がそのうち１つに手を触ると、その道具にまつわる科学者がスクリーンに登場し、挨拶の後、展示の案内が始まります。

Sings on the floor: National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation (Miraikan) / 床のサイン：日本科学未来館

Opened in 2001, they received a graphic design award for this floor sign in that year.  Back then, the idea of using the floor surface for the graphic sign was a new approach which expected to avoid putting standing sign that potencially causes clattered impression in the exhibit space.  More than decade later, they still using the same sign system and made no modifications. 

Glad to see the good idea was really a good idea and it’s still working!

2001年に開館し、この床式の案内サインはその年のグラフィックデザイン賞を獲得しました。当時、自立式サインを立てる事によって、展示空間が乱雑な印象になる可能性を避ける新しい方法と期待されてました。十数年経った今でも、改修される事無く同じサインシステムが使われています。

「良い考え」はやっぱり「良い考え」で、今でもちゃんと機能しているんですね！

The wooden bicycle: Special Exhibition THE SEKAI-ICHI, Unique inspirations “Made in Japan”, National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation (Miraikan) / 木製自転車 特別展「世界一展」、日本科学未来館

This unique mahogany bicycle is crafted by eight generation of a shipbuilder whose family business goes back to the Edo era, Sueshiro Sano.  His reputation as a craftsman in the shipbuilding business has been highly respected world wide and wanted to try his skill to other areas…Yes, bicycles.

The bike he makes weigh less than 8 kg in total and costs more than 2 million JPN Yen (about 20,000 USD).  He is hoping the wait saving method he develops for the bicycle building could be applied for the shipbuilding too.

The frame, front folk, handle, seat, seat post, wheels and bottle cage…most of the parts, even bike stand, were made from mahogany!

This is not a fake bike, it's a hard core race bike!

この一風変わったマホガニー製の自転車は、江戸時代から八代続いた船大工の後継者、佐野末四郎さんが作りました。

彼の造船技術は世界中で高く評価されていて、その技術を他の分野でも試したくなり作ってみたのが…そう、自転車だったのです。

この自転車の総重量は８キロ以下、値段は200万円します。佐野さんはこの自転車の軽量技術が造船に行かせるのではと考えてつくり始めたようです。フレーム、フロントフォーク、ハンドル、シートとシートポスト、ホィール、ボトルケージまでも…自転車スタンドまでも含み、ほとんどの部品がマホガニーです！

これはナンチャッテ自転車ではありません。本気のレースバイクです。
