Now you see, now you don’t :’ Wonders of the fungi Exhibit’ , National Museum of Nature and Science /見えたり見えなかったり：「菌類のふしぎ展」国立科学博物館

This is an exhibit of the emission fungi that stored light and emits when it’s dark.  The display case has a set of black light as well as standard light installed and the visitor could change these different type of lights for comparing the lighting effect.

The fungi were arranged in fish became visible when black light was on, otherwise difficult to recognize the fish shape under standard light.

この展示は、蓄光して暗くなると発光する菌類の展示です。展示ケースには通常の照明とブラックライトが仕込まれていて、来館者は照明を変えて比較する事が出来ます。

発光菌類は魚の形にまとめられていて、ブラックライトで観ると形はわかりますが、通常の光では形はわかりません。

Man-Nen Jimeisho: National Museum of Nature and Science /万年自鳴鐘: 国立科学博物館

Original Man-Nen Jimeisho

A man called Hisashige Tanaka, founder of electric giants Toshiba corporation, build this complicated piece of machine in 1851.  It was a six faced clock with Celestial phenomenon device on top, the six faces are; Sum Clock, Display of Twenty-four Secchi, Day of the Week, Chinese Zodiac, Ordinary Clock and Moon Age. The amazing thing was not only this clock was made by single handedly with over 1,000 parts but also, Hisashige studied Astronomy for few years before he committed to design this clock and designed and build this mechanical piece of art by him self.  
Just amazing!

The Original clock is displayed in the National Museum of Nature and Science.  Also, a replica clock is displayed in Toshiba Science Museum

Replica Man-Nen Jimeisho

これは東芝の創業者、田中久重が1851年に造った精密な機械です。天球儀を上に載せた、六面（和時計、二十四節気、曜日、十干十二支、西洋時計、月齢の時計です。驚く事に部品数が1,000を越えるこの時計を一人で造っただけでなく、天文学を数年にわたり学び、この機構を独学で考えだした事です。

凄いです！

本物は国立科学博物館に展示されていて、レプリカは東芝科学館でも観る事が出来ます。

Feel free to try on: National Showa Memorial Museum /ご自由にご試着下さい：昭和館

In most of the case in other museums, those try on cloths are gorgeous clothes for historical  lord or princess, or may be  popular uniforms like pilot, flight attendant and police.

At the National Showa Memorial Museum, the visitor can try to put on the clothes ordinary people worn during WWII in Japan, shabby material in sober colors, not too attractive looking, but I think that is exactly the point they were intended.

博物館で試着する展示は通常、華やかな殿様やお姫様の服だったり、パイロットやフライトアテンダントとか警察など、人気のユニフォームだったりします。

昭和館で試着出来るのは戦時中の地味で固い素材の服なので、あまり魅力的とは思えません…しかし、それこそがこの展示の目的なんでしょうね。

Art in Public Place: National Children’s Castle/ 公共の場にある芸術作品：青山子どもの城

There are a couple of art works by well known artists installed out side of National Children’s Castle (Children’s activity center) next to United Nations University in Tokyo.

A strong impression sculpture by an artist Taro Okamoto which titled as ‘Children’s Tree’, represents a well being of children's growth.

Other artwork is looks like a girl jump roping on the sidewall of a building.  The artist is a graphic designer/trick artist, not tricky artist, Shigeru Fukuda.

東京の国連大学の隣にある「子どもの城」の外部には、有名な作家の創った作品が２つあります。

強烈な印象の岡本太郎の「こどもの樹」と名付けられた彫刻は、こどもの成長を願ったものだそうです。

もう一つの作品は、グラフィックデザイナーであり、トリックアートの作家、福田繁雄の女の子が建物の外壁で縄跳びをしている作品です。

Manga shaped culture of mold

Since this is a Manga inspired exhibition, the characterized fungi and other characters from Manga played the important roles in the exhibit.  The large scaled cute fungi pictures were all over the exhibit space....fostering experiments mold in character’s shape, cautionary statement by the manga guy.  And more, even they installed the bending machines for selling those cute Moyashi-Mon figures, fun, fun, fun.

この展示はマンガを元にしているので、キャラクター化された菌類や、その他のマンガのキャラクターが重要な役目をしています。大きくなった菌類が展示空間中にいたり、育成実験で現れるカビの形がキャラクターになっていたり、マンガに注意されるサインだったり、何とガチャガチャまであって、カワイイもやしもんのキャラクターを買って帰る事も出来たのです。
