Local promotional character: Hyakuman san / 地域ゆるキャラ：ひゃくまんさん

In recent years in Japan, people in local areas started to develop their own mascots called ‘Yuru Chara’ ( http://www.yurugp.jp) that usually designed by using area’s unique feature like food, historical person from reason, animals, vegetation etc.

This is Hyakuman san ( Mr. Million), Ishikawa Prefecture’s local Yuru Chara.  The shape was based on the local toy figure, ‘Kaga Hachiman  Okiagari’, colourfully painted with Ishikawa’s scenery and specialties.

Also the gorgeous gold represents another characteristics of the region, historically Ishikawa dominant 99 % of gold leaf production in Japan which often used in traditional crafts, ceramic, lacquer work, metal work, architects etc.

この何年かで、各地方の特徴（食、偉人、動物、植物など）をモチーフにした、「ゆるキャラ」と呼ばれる地域マスコットが生み出されています。

これは石川県のゆるキャラ「ひゃくまんさん」です。昔からあった縁起物の加賀八幡起き上がり」に地域の名物をカラフルに描いたデザインです。

また石川県は伝統的に、工芸（漆、陶磁器、金工、建築など）に使われている金箔の９９％も生産している地域ですので、華やかな金は地域を象徴するものでもあります。

Kanazawa is known as a ‘Little Kyoto’ by its long history and preserving of the old town because the city wasn’t targeted for the air raid during WW II. So you can appreciate seeing the old town Sean that some how similar to Kyoto.  Also, Kanazawa has rich cultural background such as Craft (Ceramics, Lacquer Ware, Wood Curving, Textile, Metal Work, etc.), Art (

Performing Art, Painting, Tea Ceremony) and Buildings (Temples, Shrines, Castle, Samurai Residences) for instance.

That’s why the interior wall of the waiting room in the Kanazawa Station displays number of craft samples installed behind the circle opening, one hundred of them!

金沢は第二次世界大戦での空襲を逃れることができ、古い町並みが残っているので小京都とも呼ばれています。

景色だけではなく、金沢には、工芸（陶磁器、漆器、織物、金工）、芸術（踊り、能、絵画、茶の湯）、建築（寺社仏閣、城、武家屋敷）などの歴史ある豊かな文化を誇っています。

金沢駅の待合室内の壁面には、そのような100種の工芸の見本がはめ込まれ、見る人を楽しませています。

Nice collection, building and garden: Nezu Museum /素晴らしいコレクション、建築、庭園：根津美術館

A railroad Tycoon, Kaichro Nezu, 1860-1940, was a founder of the Tobu Railway Company who collected Japanese and Asian art and crafts.  In 1941, he opened an Art gallery at his residential property that has a beautiful Japanese style garden with teahouses he renovated.

Kengo Kuma, one of the leading architects known worldwide, designed the current museum building.

The latest exhibit is ‘The World of Edo Dandyism: From Sward to Inro’ which taking pictures are prohibited.

東武鉄道の創業者、根津嘉一郎は日本や東洋の美術、工芸品のコレクターとして有名でした。昭和16（1941）年に、それまで手を加えて整備した美しい庭や茶室のある私邸跡を、美術館として開館しました。

現在の美術館の建物は、国際的にも評価の高い隈研吾によって設計されたものです。

Fun public furniture: Kanazawa Loop Bus / 楽しい公共ベンチ：金沢ループバス

This fun looking bench is installed in the RL4- Moriyama 1-chome bus stop in the old neighborhood in Kanazawa city.

Colourful spins and glass marbles are casted in the thick acrylic slab as the bench top for this bus stop.

You may think it is way too pop and fancy for the public bench which only  needed the utility function.  However, when you visit this city which has rich cultural history, you will find this whole place is filled with high standard designed/crafted objects, food, shops, buildings, merchandising, graphics and realize how much attention people in Kanazawa are paying to the details….amazing!

この楽しいベンチは、金沢の古い町並みのある、RL4森山一丁目のバス停に設置されています。厚いアクリルの塊の中に、カラフルな独楽とビー玉が封入され、バス停のベンチの座板となっています。

普通ならバス停のベンチは、実用的な機能だけ満たせば充分なので、これはもったいないような立派なベンチだと感じると思います。しかし、長い文化的な歴史を誇る金沢に来てみると、食べ物、お店、建物、商品、グラフィックなどのデザインの質が高く、金沢の人たちのデティールに対する気配りに気がつくと思います….凄かったです！
