Providing the original sound of the old music instlsements: “Digital-Explore the digital world of historical materials”, National Museum of Japanese History / 音のアーカイブ: 「デジタルで楽しむ歴史資料展」、国立歴史民俗博物館

The museum often collect and archive the music instruments.  Most of times, they only record the instrument itself as a specimen and sometime keep the video or sound of the music instrument, if lucky.

However, thanks to the latest digital technologies, a visitor is able to “Play” and “Listen” the sound of music played with the precious specimen in the case.

Actually, even though I said “Play”, a visitor wasn’t able to hold and play the instrument in the case, but still somehow play the music by using the instruction displayed on the monitor.

In this exhibit, a visitor could enjoy listening the ensemble of the flute, hand drum or guitar.

Good way to use a digital technology.

博物館において楽器を収集、保管することは珍しくはないのですが、「資料」としての扱いとなり、演奏の音源や映像まで含めて収集していない事もままあります。資料のデジタル化を行えば、最新技術のおかげでケース内の楽器を演奏したり音を聞いたりする事も可能となるのです。もちろんケースに入っている貴重な本物の楽器を手にとって演奏する事は無理ですが、モニターの指示に従って曲を演奏したり、その曲を楽しんだりする事が可能となるのです。

この展示では、笙、琵琶、鼓の合奏を聴く事ができます。

まさに、デジタル技術があればこそ可能な展示と言えるでしょう。

Digital３D Archiving Model : “Digital-Explore the digital world of historical materials”, National Museum of Japanese History / ３Dデジタル立体アーカイブ: 「デジタルで楽しむ歴史資料展」、国立歴史民俗博物館

This exhibit allows visitor to rotate and enlarge 3D scanned fountain pen, decorated with “Makie” traditional Japanese lacquer work with gold and silver.

Since digital technology allows to turn and magnify the detailed fine painting on the surface, the visitor is able to appreciate the beauty of the graphics and fine craftsmanship on the small surface of the pen.

Good way to use a digital technology.

この展示では、来館者は蒔絵の施された万年筆を自由に回転させたり拡大させたりして観察する事ができます。

デジタル技術のおかげで、小さな万年筆の表面に描かれた蒔絵の図柄をどの角度からも見る事ができ、また拡大する事で漆職人の技を調べる事もできるのです。

まさに、デジタル技術があればこそ可能な展示と言えるでしょう。

“Kawaii” mascot figure: Digital-Explore the digital world of historical materials, the National Museum of Japanese History /かわいい企画展オリジナル三次元キャラクター： デジタルで楽しむ歴史資料展、国立歴史民俗博物館

This temporary exhibit had own original 3D mascot figure, ‘Momi-Chan’ and the visitor was greeted by her, projected as a hologram image at the beginning of the exhibit.

来館者が会場の入り口に入ると、ホログラムで３D投影された、この企画展のオリジナルキャラクターの「もみちゃん」に出迎えてもらえます。
