Chaos with order: Tokyo Metro Otemach / 秩序あるカオス状態：東京メトロ 大手町

An old part of the Tokyo Metro Otemachi station is build a half century ago and had to accommodate number of renovations over the decade.

This picture, a ceiling of one of the pass way witnessed the station history and a good example of the work of the unknown ordinary workers in Japan over the years, plumbers, electricians and construction workers. 

The piping was laid evenly, bended around the corner delicately and creates some kind of ordered impressions otherwise tend to be chaotic results.

Remember, those pipes are for station utilities, not for the rocket engineering.

In Japan you could find ‘class (quality)’ even in the ordinary people’s everyday work.

東京メトロの大手町駅の古い場所は、半世紀前に建てられた所もあり、何十年にわたる改築工事を経ています。この写真にある連絡通路は駅の歴史を示すとともに、その間に関わった日本では普通に見られる配管、電気、建築関連の職人さん達の仕事ぶりを知る事が出来る良い実例です。配管は均一に配され、角も丁寧に曲げられ、得てして雑然としてしまう所に秩序を感じさせる仕事を見せています。

これは駅の設備用の配管であって、決してロケットみたいな精密機器用の配管ではありません。日本では、普通の人の普通の仕事の中にも「品質」を実感できるのです。

Exhibit the process: Toyota Automobile Museum / 創作の課程を展示する：トヨタ博物館

It is not easy to exhibit the process of creating something.  Probably movie or multimedia that communicate through monitor or screen would be better suited to trace the series of events.  However, sometimes museum planner/designer challenge the hard way by various reasons, wants to avoid too many monitors in the space, allow number of different view angles or simply loved the small scale models, etc.

At the Toyota Museum, the car design process was shown in series of scaled modes, role of the designer in different phase from developing the concept, making scale model to the life sized model, etc.  They use scale models for describing the model making process, make sense. The process model is simplified the scene which has more advantage than movie for focusing on the detail of the events/activities that really want to show.

創作活動の課程を展示するのは簡単ではありません。手順を追って説明するのは、映像やメルチメディアでスクリーンやモニターを通して説明する方がふさわしいのかも知れません。しかし、博物館のプランナーやデザイナーは、「展示室にモニターを沢山置きたくない」「来館者の視点を固定せずいろんな角度からみてほしい」あるいは単に「模型が好き」など様々な理由から、難しくても時にはチャレンジを試みる事があります。

トヨタ博物館ではアイデアスケッチから始まり縮尺模型制作、実物大模型制作等、車をデザインする課程でのデザイナーの役割を情景を再現した縮尺模型を使って解説しています。模型を使って模型制作の課程を説明するのは、理にかなってますよね。

制作過程を説明する模型は単純化されることで、実際に見せたい課程や動作に焦点を当てた表現となっています。

The character is as if talking to you

If you need to check the rest room at the Gundam Front in Tokyo, this is what you could expect when you enter the normally a quiet place.

The　famous line of each Gundam manga characters and pictures,  Amuro Ray, Char Aznable or Lalah Sune, etc.

With a little disappointment, there is no lines displaying in the compartment, I wonder what the women’s room might be?  I hope they have enough lines to enjoy in there side too.

もし東京のガンダムフロントでトイレトイレに行きたくなったら、こんな風になってますので、あまりノンビリ過ごせないかもしれません。

ガンダムのキャラクターの顔や有名な台詞（アムロ・レイ、シャア・アズナブルやララァ・スンなど）が壁に書かれているのです。

チョット残念な事に、個室の方の壁には何も書いていなかったので、女性のトイレの中にも充分に台詞が書かれているか心配になってしまいました。

Integrated workshop: Kawaguchi Science Museum / 展示室に融合させたワークショップ：川口市立科学館

Usually, the workshop space locates in separate place from the exhibit area in the science centres or museums. However, at the Kawaguchi Science Museum the workshop space is fully integrated in the exhibit space.  Actually, this science center is designed as one big open space with two story high ceiling like a factory, which may appropriate metaphor since historically Kawaguchi had been a center for the metal casting industries until late 20^th century.

One side of the exhibit/workshop space is a floor to ceiling open shelf which houses all the workshop tools and equipment．The worktable is used as the exhibit bases when the workshop programs aren’t operated.  Clever use of the limited space!

科学館や博物館においてワークショップを行うスペースは、通常は展示室と別の場所に設けられています。しかし川口市立科学館では、ワークショップスペースと展示スペースが融合された空間となっています。

ここの空間は工場のような、二階分の天井高の大きな一体空間です。川口が20世紀後半まで鋳造の街として栄えた歴史が有る事を考えると、この空間イメージも納得してしまいます。

展示空間のワークショップエリアの壁面は床から天井までのオープン棚となっていて、ワークショップの道具等が収納されています。ワークショップ用のテーブルは、ワークショップを行っていない時は展示装置の台として使われています。

賢い空間の使い方をしていますね！
