How to show the size of digital memories: ‘Measuring’, this much, That much, How much?’ / ：デジタルメモリーのサイズをどう見せるか：単位展、あれくらい、それくらい、どれくらい？

When you want to exhibit the data sizes, you could show the different products like SD card or USB memories of 4, 8, 16 or 32 GB for instance. However, the capacity of the memories are invisible thing, one can’t tell the size difference among the medias if no memory sizes are shown. It is less convincing visitors by just only showing digit numbers.

That’s the problem when you want to make an exhibit dealing with digital technologies.

Most of time, digital technology is so abstract, nothing to ‘show’ the difference.

This is one of the answers somebody came up with.

Play various motion movies in different file sizes, which could compare resolutions and the length.  It’s easy to understand by one look, clever!

データサイズを展示する場合、4,8,16あるいは32GBなどの異なる容量のSDカードやUSBメモリーを展示することはできます。しかし、メモリー容量というのは目に見えないものなので、製品の外に記載されている数字だけを見せても説得力があまりありません。

多くの場合デジタル技術は目に見えないものなのですので、デジタル技術の展示を考える時には、このことがいつも問題となります。

この展示を考えた人が、一つの回答出してくれました。

画像解像度や尺の長さの違いでファイル容量の異なる、いろんな映像を上映しているのです。これで一目でテータ容量の違いがわかりますね。

Usually the amount of the ink in the pen is indicated by the volume, however, they tried to show the amount by the length of line how long one boll point pen could draw.

This is a rather unique exhibit intended to dealing with ‘measurement’, weight, length, area and time, so on.  It also exhibits more personalized measurement unit, which invented by the artists.

This type of exhibition theme is perfect for science centre; they also introduced several exhibits, which might as good as for a contemporary art museum.  The exhibition would give an opportunities for the visitors to question their common cense one more time and reconsider their day to day life from other perspective.

これは、重さや長さ、面積や時間など計測の「単位」の展示で、アーティストが作った計測単位も展示されています。

このようなテーマの展示は科学館にぴったりですが、アート作品として現代美術館に展示できるような展示も幾つかありました。

展示を通して、来館者が日常の常識をもう一度見直したり、毎日の生活を別のか視点から見直す機会となるような良い展示でした。

Example: karakuri puppets at Toshiba Science Museum

One of the common exhibits in the museum is showing something different theme or artifact that related to the main exhibit.  In this example, ‘karakuri puppet (automata)’ 19 th. Century Japanese technology is displays with Toyota’s textile machinery’s control technology. 

By introducing the historical technology, which might somehow relate to influence on developing the modern industry would help understand the background of industrialization on Japanese technology.
