Charles Darwin, Origin of Species

One thing I found impressed most, not mention the quality of the specimen, was the exhibition concept that focusing on the pioneer scientist in each scientific field, Biologist Charles Robert Darwin, Comparative anatomist Richard Owen and Volcanologist Sir William Hamilton, just name few.

Even though I didn’t know much of those scientists introduced in the exhibit floor, knowing the pioneer person who dedicated to establish the new fields of science, helped my expectation on the exhibit and those scientific fields.

 この企画展示で感銘を受けたのは、（資料の質の高さは当然の事として…）展示計画が各自然科学分野の先駆者個人に焦点を当てた構成になっていた事です。

例えば生物学者のチャールズ・ダーヴィン、比較解剖学者のリチャード・オーウィン、火山学者のウィリアム・ハミルトン卿などです。

展示で紹介されている先駆者のほとんどは初めて聞く名前で知らない人ばかりでしたが、彼らのよって新しい科学分野が開拓された事を知ると、その人となりのみならず彼らの研究した分野についても興味を持って展示を見る事ができました。

Metal Plate

This temporary exhibit was actually a traveling exhibit which shows the historically important specimens Natural History Museum in London, UK.

Most of the specimens brought were first time on public view in Japan.

This particular exhibit was a series of the drawings and original plate for the printing a botanical picture book.

They displayed from original coloured hand sketch, the finished full coloured print ready final drawing, metal printing plate and printed picture page.

I really appreciated to examine the detail of the fine original drawings as well as learning how the scientifically accurate reference picture book was made.

この企画展示は、大英自然史博物館の重要な資料を選別展示する特別展です。ほとんどの資料は日本で初めて紹介されるもので、見ごたえのある展示でした。

この展示は植物図鑑をつくる過程を、原画から版下などを使って見せてくれています。

最初の植物スケッチに始まり、最終的な印刷用版下の下絵、印刷の金属版、そして印刷された図版のページ等、細かいところまで描かれた下絵を観察したり、科学的に正確な図鑑はどのようにつくられているのかが分かります。

いつまでも見ていられる、興味の尽きない展示でした。

Volume is the value: National Museum of Nature and Science / 量が大切：国立科学博物館

 People always fascinated with seeing “real” things (specimens/artifact).

So, if the museum has enough specimens and artifacts, it is not so difficult to fill the cases in the exhibit floor by displaying the selected collections and may be add some interactive or videos for attracting the visitor’s interest.

This is an example of such, dozens of actual specimens of crustacean, insects to crabs, displayed floor to ceiling and attracted many visitors admiring.

人はいつも「本物」に魅せられるものです。もし博物館が大量の資料を収蔵保管しているのでしたら、あまり苦労をせずとも展示室空間内の展示ケースの中を埋める事はできるでしょうし、追加するにしてもインタラクティブ展示か映像展示程度で、十分来館者の興味を引く事ができるかもしれません。

国立科学博物館の展示は良い例かもしれません。足元から天井までの背の高いガラスケースに何百点もの甲殻類（昆虫からカニ・エビ類）の資料が展示され、圧倒的な量を誇る実物資料だけで来館者を魅了しているのです。
