The granite block

This is an exhibit for the train tunnel construction. The corner has a canopy that looks like a section of the tunnel, indicating the exhibit theme.

The left side exhibit is a huge block of granite from the tunnel construction site with a hole in the middle.  You stick your head inside and make a humming sound inside; you will hear the echo of your humming. The sound wouldn’t absorb in the rock, but reflects.

The right hand exhibit is a movie showing the bottleneck problem before constructing the tunnel.  

Is the movie interesting?  Look at this family, every one of them, what would you think?

The video booth

これは鉄道トンネルの展示コーナーです．コーナーの上はトンネンルの断面を模した覆いが被せられ低手，演示のテーマを演出しています。

左側の展示はトンネルの工事現場からの大きな御影石のブロックで中央に穴があけられています。頭を穴の中に入れてハミングをするとエコーが聞こえてきます。音は岩には吸収されず反射するからです。

右側の展示は、トンネルによって通行障害が解消された様子の映像展示です。

どれだけ映像が面白いのかって？

Sign on the floor: The Swiss Transport Museum / 床の上のサイン：スイス交通博物館

This cute looking sign on the floor indicates ‘Locomotive’, big chimney and rising smoke.

It is simplified iconic graphic but somehow gives more than strait forward pictogram’s cut and dry impression almost a picture like quality.

Well, nothing wrong with strait forward pictogram, of cause…

このカワイイ感じの床グラフィックは煙突と煙を特徴的に表現している「蒸気機関車」のアイコンです。

単純化されたアイコンですが、通常の無味乾燥な簡素化されたピクトに比べ、まるで絵のような印象を与えています。

けっして、簡素化されたピクトに問題が有るとは言ってませんよ…

Hard to stop the heavy wheel: The Swiss Transport Museum / 重たい車輪を止めるのは大変：スイス交通博物館

This exhibit is a simple mechanism but never seen any other places yet. It offer the experiencing how and what happens when train wheel need to stop.

The visitor spins the heavy steel train wheel by the disk handle connected to the wheel.  Because the wheel is too heavy, one must start spinning the wheel slowly in the beginning then accelerate gradually to the high speed.

To apply the brake, pull down the cantilever handle.

When I try this exhibit, I realized how hard to start moving and also stop the heavy wheel, but same time wondered what might happen when the handle caught the sleeve of piece of cloth, especially small children.  The wheel would keep spinning, never stop...

I notice they used a solid disk handle for safety reason I assume, but it would be difficult to design the exhibit like this in Japan.

この展示はシンプルな展示ですが、他ではあまり見た事がありません。これは鉄道の車輪を止める体験装置です。

来館者は車輪に直結したハンドルで回して重たい鉄製の車輪を回転させます。車輪はとても重たいので、ハンドルは最初のうちはゆっくりと、だんだんと回転を速くして行きます。ブレーキをかけるには、テコの原理のハンドルを手前に引いて止めます。

この展示を体験してみましたが、重たい車輪を回したり止めたりするのが如何に大変か良くわかりました。しかし、同時にもしこのハンドルに小さな子どもの袖や服が絡まった時の事を考えさせられてしまいました。いったん車輪が回転し始めると、回り続けて簡単に止まらないのです。

確かにハンドルは一枚もので引っかかりが少ないディスクタイプですが、同じようなデザインを日本で行うのは難しいと思いました。

Unmanned demonstration: Darwin Center, Natural History Museum / 無人実演展示：ダーウィンセンター、ロンドン自然史博物館

This is one of the exhibit I was impressed most when I visited the Natural History Museum’s new annex, Darwin Centre.

The purpose of the Darwin Centre is to introduce the day-to-day work of the natural scientists.  Therefore, the restricted research space and the entry free exhibit area are only separated by a wall with a lot of windows for visitors to peek other side.

In this picture, looking in the window from exhibit space, one could see a worktable used by the botanist for sorting the herbariums. If you are lucky, you could have a chance to observe botanist work on this table.  However, most of the time this room is empty and not much attractive things you could expect to find, only some chairs, worktable and steel shelves.

Well, somebody came up a great idea to make this botanist work space more entertaining.  How they present the process of the botanist’s work is remarkable.  They projected the work of the botanist directly to the tabletop, showing the hands of a scientist handling the herbariums, sort, flip and write names behind the cardboard.  In addition, some description for the work process appears above the table top with the effect of casting shadow as if it float in the air.

All look real and lively, never board to watch the whole work sequence.

Looking in the work space from exhibit side

これはダーヴィンセンターで一番驚いた展示です。

ダーヴィンセンターの目的は、自然科学者の日常の活動を紹介する事です。その為、外部の人が入れない研究者の研究場所と、一般に公開されている展示空間を壁一枚で仕切り、窓を付けて来館者が研究所の中を覗けるようにしています。

この写真は展示室から窓をのぞいた様子で、植物学者が標本を扱う時の作業台が見えます。もし運が良ければ、植物学者が実際に作業をしている所を見る事ができます。しかし、ほとんどの時間は空っぽの作業空間を覗く事になり、椅子や机、棚等さして面白いものは見当たりません。

そこで植物学者の作業空間を面白く見せる、凄いアイデアを思いついた人がいたようです。本当に、この植物学者の作業手順の見せ方は見事なものです。

研究者の作業を直接作業テーブルに映し出しているのです。研究者の手が植物標本の台紙を分けたり、裏返したり、学名を記入したりする作業を投影しています。また、その作業の説明文を書いたボードが、テーブルトップの上に浮いたように見せるように、影まで付けてあります。

凄くリアルに見えて、いつまでも飽きずに見てられます。
