I had no idea until I saw it: Sewerage Exhibit / 展示を見るまでちっとも知らなかった：下水道展示

 　Display cases on the Bureau side

There are several moderate display cases installed on the hallway in the Otemachi rea’s Nippon Building between Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s Bureau of Sewerage and Tokyo Metropolitan Sewerage Service Corporation.

The displays on the Bureau side were, some graphic panels and photographs that introduced the history of their facilities in Mikawashima, Nationally designated Important Cultural Property and special exhibit that commemorate the 130 years anniversary of the Sewerage facility at Kanda.

The displays on the Corporation side were their sewerage products with the detailed descriptions on the graphic board with text, pictures and even with big monitor.  Foe me, it was well-informed displays and interesting to learn about the technologies that put into the invisible products, usually buried in the underground.

Pictures of the Kanda. Sewerage Facility 

大手町界隈にある日本ビル内の、東京下水道局事務所と東京下水道サービス株式会社の間の廊下には、ちょっとしたディスプレイケースが並んでいます。

下水道局側には子に指定重要文化財の旧三河島汚水処分場ポンプ場施設や神田下水１３０周年を記念する解説パネルなどが展示されていました。下水道サービス側には、普段土の中に埋められてしまう下水関係の製品が、写真付きの解説パネルで詳細に説明されていました。普段目にする機会の少ない下水について知ることが、こんなに面白いとは知りませんでした。

Display on the Corporation side

Exhibiting Digital Books in the Museum : Toyo Bunko Museum/ 博物館でのデジタル書籍の展示：東洋文庫博物館

The advantage of using digital book in the exhibit is ability of improving the accessibility.  The visitor could go through pages, see back and forth, and compare pages etc. You can achieve similar experience by making replica book or simply copy all pages on the wall, but digital book would give the visitor more ‘touch points’ by its clear image and ability of flip pages, enlarge the details and audio assistance in some cases.

デジタル書籍を展示で使うメリットはアクセス性の向上です。来館者は自由にページをめくり行ったり来たりする事が出来、ページ同士を比べたりも可能です。複製の書籍を作ったり、ページを全てコピ−した物を壁に張り出しても似たような体験は提供できますが、デジタル書籍は高精細の画像をめくったり拡大したり、展示によっては音声のガイダンスも追加されもっと深い体験を提供することが出来るのです。

Information Counter：Nihonbashi / 案内カウンター : 日本橋

The history of Nihonbashi goes back to the Edo era, where the center of the commercial district since then.  Because of their long history of the location, the staff in this information counter wears ‘yukata’, casual kimono.  (see far right).

This information counter is located inside a shop, which offers traditional Japanese crafts and gift items for tourists and foreigners.

There are some occasion staff members who handle for foreign visitors also wear yukata.

Nihonbashi

日本橋の歴史は江戸時代までさかのぼることができます。その歴史を反映して、この案内カウンターのスタッフは、浴衣を着ています。

また、案内カウンターは観光客や外国人客向けに日本の工芸品などのお土産を販売するショップと一体で配置されています。

東京日本橋

Monument in the Station : Tokyo Station / 駅の中のモニュメント：東京駅

This painting was created by the elementary and junior high school students from Ou-Katsu area in Ishino-maki, Miyagi where hard hit by the Tsunami caused by a Great East Japan Earth Quake in 2011.  

There was a stone cut factory in Ou-Katsu who contracted to produce all roof slates for Tokyo Station, but the factory was washed out by the big Tsunami when the production was almost over and all slates were stacked outside, ready for shipping.

Fortunately, they retrieved 15,000 sheets, about 70 % of which needed, from rubble that piled up entire area.  They had managed to save most of the slates and all slates recovered were successfully laid on the roof of the newly renovated Tokyo Station.

In commemoration of this amazing incident, 150 children participated to paint an image of Mt. Fuji, spiritual symbol for Japanese, on the slate and proudly displayed in the renovated Station.

Beside the display, a small graphic panel is telling those story and small piece of slate was installed for free touching.

この絵は、2011の東日本大震災で津波の被害を受けた、宮城県石巻市勝浦地区の小、中学生によって描かれました。雄勝地区には東京駅の屋根を葺くスレートを生産する工場があり、スレート生産をほとんど終え、屋外に積み上げていた時に津波によって流されてしまったのです。

幸運にも、全体の７割に当たる15,000枚を、辺りに積み重なった瓦礫の中から回収することができました。救出したスレートで無事に、再建する東京駅の屋根を葺くことができました。

この奇跡のような出来事を記念して、雄勝地区の子どもたち150人によって日本の象徴となる富士山の絵がスレートの上に描かれ、改築された東京駅の中に誇りを持って展示されています。

展示ケースの横には、経緯を説明するグラフィックパネルと実際に触れるスレートのサンプルが展示されています。
