Art in public place: Shinjuku west exit/ 公共の場のアート：新宿西口

This large glass eye was a work of a sculptor/painter Yoshiko Miyashita and titled as “Shinjuku no Me ( Eye of Shinjuku)” which installed in 1969.

It is back lit with rotating pupil.  It is visually powerful piece of art and going strong and well in almost a half century later.

このガラスの目は、彫刻家で画家の宮下芳子が1969年に制作した「新宿の目」と題された作品です。

背面からの照明で照らされ、瞳の部分は回転しています。

完成から半世紀ほど経ちますが、今日見てもインパクトがあるのには驚きです。
