The original full colour paintings,
15 pictures as a set, had been kept in the Catholic Church, Uragami Tenshu–do
in Nagasaki, but destroyed by the atomic bomb by the end of WWII.
There was a set of photographic
glass dry plate which probably taken around 1930-40, but no colour reference other
than only one surviving painting out of 15.
The researchers analyzed
the B/W shade of dry plate image against single surviving painting for
identifying the original colours. They
also compared other similar paintings in same era as the reference for assuming
the original colour.
Thanks to the
digital technology, they were able to make an intelligent guessing for the true
colours and recreated the whole coloured picture set.
