Okamura is an office furniture company that
established as a manufacturing the daily necessities like pots and pans right
after WII when practically nothing was left after entire country was ruined and
lost the war.
Then in 1947, they started to produce the
office furniture for the occupying US military and become one of major office
steel furniture manufacture in Japan. During their early time, they had built a
prototype plane N-52 in 1953 and succeeded for the test flight. They also build a Japan’s first torque convertor
for the automobile in 1951 and a prototype car called “Mikasa” in 1955.
They failed for the mass producing their
Mikasa, but kept manufacturing the torque converter for other automobile companies.

オカムラ製作所は事務家具製造会社として知られていますが、創業当初は戦後の物のない時代に鍋などの日用必需品の製造から始まった会社です。1947年、当時日本を占領していた米軍からスチール製の事務家具の受注を受けたのをきっかけに、国内大手のスチール家具製造会社に成長したのです。
創業当初には、その技術力を活かすべく「N-52」と呼ばれる飛行機の試作機を1953年に製造し、試験飛行に成功したり、1951年には日本初の自動車用トルクコンバーターを、1955年には「ミカサ」と名付けた独自の自動車も試作しています。残念ながら自動車を市場に出すことはありませんでしたが、そうの優秀なトルクコンバーターは自動車製造他社へOEM供給をしていました。
