Design on the street : Telecom Center / 街中のデザイン：テレコム センター

All stations at New Transit Yurikamome have designated station’s symbol Graphic motif for easy recognition on each station without understanding Japanese writings. The symbol motifs are taken from Edo era, 17^th – 19 th centuries, common design motif among fabrics and printings.

For instance, Telecom Center Station uses ‘Bat’ since it was considered as ‘child care’ and meant to be a happy sign in old Japan because both share same pronunciation. Also, in China, because of the same pronunciation, bat and happiness, bat was a welcomed.

ゆりかもめの全ての駅には、日本語が読めなくてもここの駅がわかるように、それぞれシンボルとなるグラフィックモチーフがあります。それらのモチーフは江戸時代の着物や版画で使われていた模様を元にしています。

例えばテレコム　センター駅では、「コウモリ」をシンボルとしています。江戸時代には、「子守」につながるとして喜ばしい模様とされており、さらに中国においても蝙蝠の「蝠」が「福」と同じ発音なので、幸福の象徴とされていたようです。
