Historic site on the street: Hachobori / 街中の史跡：八丁堀

During Edo era, 17^th – 19^th. Centuries, the role of judicial and police forces were handled by the government officials called ‘Yoriki (Direct Minister of Shogun)’ and ‘Doshin (Yoriki’s subordinate)’. 

In early days, there were 10 Yorikis and 50 Doshins, and grown to 50 Yorikis and 280 Doshins who reside in same neibourhood in this area, Hachobori.

江戸時代の司法・警察の役割を担っていたのが将軍家直臣の「与力」と、その与力に仕える「同心」と呼ばれた役人達です。

江戸初期には、与力は10名、同心は50名でしたが、最終的には与力50名、同心は280名まで増えました。

この八丁堀界隈は当時、与力や同心の組屋敷があった場所です。
