An Exhibit in the Subway Station: Tokyo Metro & Japan Society of Civil Engineering / 地下鉄駅内の展示：東京メトロ＆土木学会

This exhibit displays interpretive panels for construction of the 87 years old Japan’s first (first in Asia too) subway, Ginza Line’s as well as more recent bench marking subway projects which information material was provided from Tokyo Metro Company.  And also displayed various mile stone civil engineering projects in past 100 years and those materials were provided from Japan Society of Civil Engineering.

The exhibit was set up in the underground subway concourse, heavily traffic area where always clouded by the commuting pedestrians.  The exhibit is consisted with the big panels with a lot of texts, photos and drawings, lots of information to swallow in busy surroundings.  I thought this is not an appropriate place for displaying such an intense information at first, noisy, poor lighting and people constantly coming and going.  However, when I realized this concourse is actually connected the space with the original Ginza Subway Line, it made sense to me to have an exhibit in this historical location despite the poor exhibit conditions.

この展示は、今年で８７年となる日本で最初（アジアでも初めて）の地下鉄銀座線の解説パネルや、その後の地下鉄のエポックメイキングな事業など、東京メトロの資料を元に紹介をしています。また、土木学会からの資料を使い、１００年にわたる土木工学の歴史上重要なプロジェクトもあわせて紹介しています。

展示は地下のコンコースに並べられていて、人通りが多く通勤客で混んだ場所です。解説パネルは解説文や写真、図面で埋められ、一枚あたりの情報量はかなり多く、それが何枚も並んだ状態ですので簡単には内容を理解できません。最初、この空間はこのような情報量の多い展示をするのにはふさわしい場所とは思えませんでした。騒々しいし、照明も良くないし、常に沢山の人が行き来していますから。しかし、このコンコースは元祖銀座線とつながった空間駄知気がついたら展示環境としては不備があるものの、この展示を行うのにふさわしい「現場」だと考え直しました。
