Entrance wall: filing cabinet drawers and cards

This is an exhibit I saw few years back and really liked the design.

Tadao Umesao (June 13, 1920 - July 3, 2010) is a Japanese ecologist, ethnologist, and information scientist, futurist who became an initial director of the National Museum of Ethnology in 1974.  Actually, National Museum of Ethnology was a brainchild of him.

Walk around behind the mural

This special exhibit was retrospective work of his achievements.  One of his unique habits of organizing information he collected was wrote down everything on the cards and sorting by categories.  Thus, his office wall was filled by the steel filing cabinets and the entrance design created the scene just like that. 

When visitor enter the exhibit, walk behind one of the file cabinet drawer and he/she will find walking on the pile of file folders in his office.

この展示は数年前に見たものですが、展示デザインが素晴らしいので紹介いたします。

梅棹忠男（1920年6月13日—2010年7月3日）は日本の誇る、生態学者、民族学者、情報科学者、未来科学者で、1974年に国立民族学博物館の館長に就任した方です。国立民族学博物館は、実は梅棹氏が産み出した戦後初の国立博物館でした。

この特別展は、梅棹氏の業績の回顧展でした。梅棹氏は集めた情報を整理するとき、なんでもカード化して分類整理することで知られています。氏の事務室は壁面いっぱいにカードを入れるスチールキャビネットで埋め尽くされていたので、この特別展の入り口もそれに習ってデザインされています。

来館者が展示の入り口に入るには、スチールキャビケットの引き出しの裏に回り、氏の事務室のファイルフォルダーの束の上を歩いて中に進みます。

展示の導入としては、素晴らしい演出ですね！
