Tokyo station was build in 1914 and top
half was destroyed by the Tokyo air raid in 1945 during WWII. Then received
quick refurbishment in 1947 which only restored the bottom half of the building. The renovation work was intended to quickly
restore the station function, not for fully restore the original building. They decided to gave up rebuild the destroyed
3rd floor but build the strait shape pitched roof, rather than the
original dome shape, directly above the 2nd floor.
To commemorate the Tokyo Station’s 100th
anniversary, JR East decided to restore back to the original building design
and completed the restore construction in 2012.
An exhibit corner was set up in the station
which exhibit regarding to the area of the station building where the newly
added by the renovation along with building material as the artifact, original
brick wall and pillars that used for the renovation in 1947.
The challenge of renovating this new station
was how to make this historic building as earthquake-resistant while
station had been used during day-to-day bases. They replaced
entire foundation of the building without damaging the building standing
above.

東京駅は1914年に建設され、第2次世界大戦中の1945年に空襲により上半部が消失してしまいました。1947年に2階までの修復を行いました。修復作業は駅の機能回復を急いで行う事が優先され、建物をオリジナルの状態に戻すものではありませんでした。消失した3階部分の修復は諦め、2階部分の上に直接被せられた屋根は元々あったドーム型の屋根ではなく、施工が簡単な直線式の屋根でした。
修復作業で新しく駅舎に追加された部分を解説する展示が駅の中に作られており、オリジナルのレンガ壁や1947年の改修時に使われた柱などの実物資料も展示されています。
