Last Exhibition: Museum of Modern Art, Kamakura & Hayama / 最後の展覧会：鎌倉近代美術館

This museum had build in 1951, when Japan was still suffered by the WWII and yet to recover economically.  Despite the hard economical and social environment during post war situation, the Kanagawa prefecture had been decided to build a museum and design competition was held.  They awarded the building designed by an architect Junzo Itakura who had been worked at Le Corbusier studio before war.  The well-detailed building design was so modern looking in that time and became symbol for post war peacetime modern art culture.

Unfortunately, the lease contract on the property would be expire in the end of this March and the Museum must be closed.

Originally, as soon as the lease ends, the building would be demolished but due to the strong protest from Architecture communities, the building would be saved for time being.

この美術館は、経済的にはまだ第２時世界大戦の影響が残っていた1951年に建てられました。経済や社会にまだ戦争の影響が残っていたにも関わらず、神奈川県は美術館を立てる事を決め、設計コンペを行いました。選ばれたデザインは、戦前ル・コルビジェのアトリエにいた建築家板倉準三の作品でした。

最先端の細部まで配慮されたモダンな建築は、戦後の平和な時代の近代美術文化の象徴となったのです。

今年の３月に土地の借地権契約が終了するのに伴い、残念ながら美術館は閉館する事となったのです。当初は借地契約終了で建物も撤去される予定でしたが、建築界からの反対が起き、とりあえずは建物は残ることとなったようです。
