Filling the missing parts: American Museum of Natural History 1 / 足りない部分の埋め合わせ：アメリカ自然史博物館 1

The exhibit designer, planner, curator or whoever did a great job at the American Museum of Natural History.

One of a great trick they conducted is an elegant way of filling the missing fossil part on skelton display.  Usually, the missing bone is sculpted with white resin, which looks like made of plaster, imitating the size, shape volume of the original but missing skelton.  It is OK, looks real but sometime the shape and size is based on hypothesis and block the view of the real fossil behind/under the fake Skelton because of its opaque material.

In this exhibit, they didn’t create fake Skelton looks like but draw the outline with bent steel rod, which perfectly show the size and shape of the original missing Skelton but still allow seeing through.  Also this is better approach and makes more sense because there is no mistaken to separate original and recreated parts.

アメリカ自然博物館の展示デザイナーかプランナー、ひょっとしたら学芸員の誰かが素晴らしい仕事をしてくれています。

素晴らしい展示手法の一つは、骨格化石の欠損部分の補足の方法です。通常、石膏のような白い樹脂で不足部分の骨格の形や大きさを再現しています。まぁ、本物っぽく見えてそれでも良いのですが、時によってはそれは想定であったり、再現した不透明素材の骨格によって、オリジナルの骨格部

分が見えなくなり隠れてしまう事も有ります。

この展示では模造の骨格を作るのではなく、鉄棒を使い骨格のアウトラインを描き、オリジナルの骨格の形や大きさをひょい表現し、しかも後側が隠れて見えなくなる事も有りません。
