Nihonbashi, literally means ‘Japan Bridge’ which the original wood bridge was build during Edo period.　It is said the first wood bridge was build in 1603 and current stone bridge, presumed as19^th or 20^th generation, that build in 1911.

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology award this current stone bridge as the important cultural property.

Nihonbashi is also designated as the zero km point of nation’s road network.

The drawback is the Metropolitan Expressway build above the historical stone bridge.  The Expressway was the important urban infrastructure for the Tokyo Olympic in 1964.　The government decided to utilize the space above rivers in Metropolitan Tokyo for building the expressway in tight schedule, which could avoid community conflict on land acquisition.

As the result, Tokyo lost a beautiful historical landscape….

最初の日本橋は江戸時代に架けられた木造の橋でした。初代は1603年に架けられたと言われ、現在の石造の橋は1911年に架けられたものです。文科省によって国の重要文化財指定を受けています。

また日本橋は日本の道路網の起点でもあります。

欠点は、橋の上に造られた首都高速道路です。1964年に開催された東京オリンピックのための重要な都市インフラとして首都高が造られました。短い建築期間だったため、用地買収などの手間を省くべく、川の上の空間を首都高用に活用したのです。

その結果、東京の美しい都市景観を失うことになってしまいました。
