Mirrored back and floor

We always puzzled how to display a large object that full of interesting details in any angle.  Sometime put a platform, bring people going up or down to show the specific details. 

The picture is one trick to show the big locomotive, Virginia & Truckee Railroad No. 13 Empire, from various perspectives by placing large sloped mirrored back and floor panels.  Using mirror is nothing new, however, covering such a huge surface like this example is not common, seeing much smaller mirror in limited places instead.

The effect of making a big mirrored wall & floor like this is, gave “special” feeling to the viewers.  And the visitor could appreciate seeing all those fully restored details from any angles.

魅力的なディテールがたくさんある大きな資料を展示する時は、どう見せるかいつも悩みます。それらのディテールを見てもらえるよう台を作り、上からや下からなどいろんな所を見てもらえる工夫をします。

写真の例は、大きなバージニア＆トラッキー鉄道13エンペラー号を、背景パネルと床パネルを鏡面にしていろんな角度から詳細を見せる工夫をした展示です。鏡を使う事自体は珍しい手法ではないのですが、もっと小さい鏡を限定的に使うのが普通で、この写真のように大きな面積で使う例はあまりありません。

この写真のように背景と床が大きな鏡面なのは、「特別感」を創出したかったからと思います。

もちろん、来館者は丁寧に復元された機関車の姿を様々な角度で楽しめる効果が絶大なのは言うまでもありません。
