Early Computer in Japan 1: Statistical Museum/ 日本の初期のコンピューター1：統計資料館

The Statistical Museum is a part of the Statistic Bureau, the Japanese government.  It wasn't easy to just get into this museum.  You are stopped and asked the ID by the parking lot guard to just step in the open property.  When you enter the building, asked the ID again and write down your name, address and purpose of your visit, ‘visiting the museum’  for instance.  Then, you’ve got a pass card to clear the gate and able to head to the museum at last.  At the entrance of the museum, you are asked to write your name and where you come from….  Quite a hassle to see the exhibit isn’t it?

By the way, because of this tight security procedure, I didn’t see any other visitors while I was there and may be that's way the museum staff was happy to take me around.  I must say their hospitality was very good, friendly and helpful.

One of the artifact you should see is ‘Kawaguchi Electric Tabulation Machine’, an old piece of tabulation machine made from scratch in 1906 by a man called Ichitaro Kawaguti who was a disciple of the genius engineer and founder of Toshiba corporation, Hisashige Tanaka.

統計資料館は国の統計局の一部ですから、入館するのは簡単ではありません。駐車場に入る時に守衛さんに止められて、目的と身分証の提示を求められます。建物に入ってからも身分証明書の提示と住所、氏名、来場の目的（今回の目的は「資料館の見学」）の記入が必要です。ようやく通行証が渡されて入場、資料館に向かえます。資料館の入り口にくるとさらに名前とどこから来たのかを記入する事となります。

ここの展示を見ようとすると結構大変なんです…。

多分、この煩雑な手続きの性でしょうか？他の来館者は一人もいませんでした。そのためか、館の方が親切に展示の解説をして下さいました。館の方の対応は、親切丁寧に説明していただけました。

この館で見ておくべき展示資料は、「川口式電気集計機」です。1906年に作られたこの集計機は、東芝の創業者として知られる天才技師田中久重の弟子にあたる、川口一太郎によって開発されたものです。
