History of the Location: Ootemachi Underpass in Otemachi １/大手町の歴史１：大手町地下道

There is a graphic exhibit displayed in the underpass in Otemachi area next to Tokyo station. The enlarged pictures and text telling the history of the urban planning of this location, Marunouchi and Otemachi areas where newly developed Meiji civilization, right after Edo shogun’s era.

The newly formed Meiji government push hard to make this area like London city, the wide main streets along with tall stone and brick buildings.

The Great Kanto Earth Quake in 1923 and Air raid on Tokyo in 1944 and 45 had destroyed most of the building but only few of them were survived.

東京駅に隣接する大手町の地下街には、グラフィックパネルの展示があります。江戸幕府の後、明治政府になって丸の内と大手町周辺で行われた当時の都市計画について、写真とテキストで解説しています。

明治新政府はこの地域を、ロンドンのような広い大通りとレンガ造や石造の大きな建物で開発しようとしました。建物の多くは関東大震災や東京空襲により失いましたが、わずかですが残った建物もありました。
